明治29年に開坑し明治43年に閉山した山内炭坑のように、

炭坑は最後になると炭層が圧縮され、採炭は採掘時に残した炭柱のみで行います。

この場合、炭層は崩落しているのでツルハシは使わず、エブで石炭をすくい込んで運び出します。

4人以上で作業しますが、天井が低いので先山は頭を上げられず、大変な作業でした。

 

 

 

 

Sannai Coal Mine was opened in 1896 and closed in 1910. Just before shutting down the colliery, empty coal seams were condensed and only the coal pillars were left to be mined. The seam was already collapsed, so miners used hand shovels instead of pickaxes to shovel out coal. Working in groups of more than four miners, the seam was so low that they had to keep their heads down. It was really hard work!
