坑内大工と呼ばれる職種がありましたが、その主な仕事はレールの敷設や修繕でした。

機敏な男でないと仕事が間に合わなかったと作兵衛翁は記しています。

明治時代、枕木にレールを留める犬釘は少なく、手製の粗末な釘は打ちにくかったと言います。

また、レールを曲げる道具は「ジンクロ」と呼ばれていました。

 

 

In coal mines, there were carpenters in charge of laying and repairing railway tracks.

They had to be quick at this work, for they were in great demand.
Around 1900, spike nails for fixing rails to the sleeper were so scarce that poor handmade nails were used.

Those were difficult to pound! The tool illustrated in the circle on the upper part of the illustration was called "Jinkuro".

It was used to bend the rails.
