坑内に効率よく空気を循環させるために、場所によっては、

あえて風止めをつけて空気を遮断する必要がありました。

これを「モン」と呼んでいました。

しかし、炭車を通す際は開け閉めが面倒なので、開けっ放しにする者が後を絶ちません。

そこで明治の末には、絵に描かれているような色々な自動扉が考案されました。

 

In coal mines, it was essential to ventilate fresh air to the coal faces.
Therefore, in order to provide effective airflow into the pit,

sometimes doors called "Mon" were installed to shut out air from different directions.

But for miners carrying coal cars, these Mons got in their way, and many miners left them open, rendering them useless.
That's why automatic doors, as seen in this painting, came into use from around 1910.
