資本力を持つ大規模炭坑では、切羽採炭の機械化が推し進められました。

描かれている機械はコールカッターといい、炭層の下部を切り込んでいくものです。

作品の上部に描かれている物は旧式のコールカッターです。

これが次第に中央に描かれているチェーン式のコールカッターに代わっていきます。

作兵衛翁が働いていた炭坑では昭和12年頃に導入され、能率が上がったと記されています。

The machine illustrated in this painting, called a "Coal Cutter", was used to cut into the bottom of coal seams.

The saw in the upper part of the picture is the old type of Coal Cutter.
This type was gradually replaced by a newer chain type of Coal Cutter, as illustrated below.
Sakubei noted that this machine, installed around 1937 at the mine where he was working, brought greater efficiency to the mine.
