通常、採炭は男性の先山と女性の後山の二人一組で行います。

しかし、先山が突然休んだ時に、このように一人でヤマに入る勇敢な女性もいたようです。

Usually, coal mining work was done by a pair of workers,

consisting of a male hewer called "Sakiyama", and a female helper called "Atoyama".

But when for some reason Sakiyama couldn't make it to the mines, the women assumed both roles, braving the hard work alone.
Their work was sometimes much more reliable than that of inexperienced male Sakiyamas.
