明治36（1903）年の初夏、現在の朝倉市秋月に出る湧水が難病に効く霊水であるという噂が、

筑豊の炭坑や北九州方面で大評判になったことがありました。
この霊水は秋月に現れた天狗の神通力によるものだということでした。
人々は我先にそのご加護にあやかろうと出向きました。

交通機関などなかった時代、

朝早くから霊水を入れる竹筒を手に、難所の八丁峠を越えて秋月を目指したそうです。

田川方面からは片道およそ30キロの道のりでした。

 

In early summer of 1903, there was a greatly popular rumor in the pits in Chikuho or in Northern Kyushu that miraculous water from a well in Akizuki, which is included in today’s Asakura City, was effective against serious diseases.
This miraculous water reportedly sprang out because of the magical powers of a Japanese long-nosed goblin called Tengu which appeared in Akizuki. 
People rushed to the well, wishing their visit would be answered.

They left their home early in the morning with a bamboo container and went over the sharp Hatcho Pass on foot heading for Akizuki, because no facilities for travel were available.

They had to walk about 30 kilometers from Tagawa to Akizuki.
