Around 1899, Sakubei and his family moved to the Kamimio Pit following his father who changed his job as a barge driver because of the start of coal transportation by train.
This painting is based on Sakubei’s memory at that time.
There were reportedly lots of migrant miners from Hiroshima in the Kamimio Pit in those days.
It is said that some of them returned home with much money after saving money by making their straw sandals by themselves or having a meal of simplicity.
However, others were immersed in life in the pit and stayed there long.
