明治中期の女の子の遊びを描いた作品です。「鯉の滝登り」という遊びです。
二人一組で両手を繋ぎ、描かれているように並びます。

その手の上を、鯉のように這って行くという遊びです。鯉が通過し終わった子どもは、前方に移動します。
男の子が三人描かれていますが、本来は女の子の遊びです。

当時の子どもたちは、男女一緒に遊ぶのを嫌っていました。

しかし、人数が足りないときは男の子も参加していたようです。

 

 

A girls’ play around 1890 is depicted in this painting. It is a play called “The Carp Swimming up a Waterfall.”
Several pairs of children lined up, holding each other’s hands. A child crawled forward on their hands like a carp.

Children in the back of the line moved to the front after the child playing the role of a carp passed them by.
This is a girls’ play by nature though three boys are depicted among girls. Boys and girls at that time hated to play together.

However, it seems that boys sometimes took part in this play when girls wanted to do so from lack of girls.
