Playing girls in the Meiji era from 1868 to 1912 are depicted in this painting.
Each of the two girls on the right alternately pushes a little piece of earthenware etc. called Menko with their forefinger.
The owner of the piecewhich runs on the other becomes the winner and takes the opponent’s one.
This game was also called Zukkomi. It is said that girls at that time also played this game with seashells.
The girl on the left is bouncing a ball. Girls enjoyed bouncing a ball and singing to the rhythm of the bounces.
