Children spinning tops in the Meiji era from 1868 to 1912 are depicted in this work.
The method of spinning a top used by the boy on the right was reportedly called Buchi.
In this method, the string is wound anti-clockwise around the top and the top is thrown from the right and spun.
On the contrary, when the string was wound clockwise and the top was thrown from the left like pulling the string, the method was reportedly called Hiki.
Tops cost 0.03 to 0.05 yen at that time. Mothers could not seemingly afford to buy them for their children pestering to do so.
