明治の中頃の子どもたちの遊びを描いた作品です。この遊びは「ネンボウ」と呼ばれる遊びです。

相手の棒を打倒し、倒した者が倒した棒を取り上げる遊びです。
しかし、子どもたちは、この棒を作る材料がなかなか手に入らず苦労していたようです。
山に行って木を取ると農家に怒られます。だからこの遊びができない炭坑もあったようです。

Farmers would get angry at them if they went to the mountains to cut wood.
