明治の中頃の子どもたちの冬の通学風景です。
先頭の子どもはコートを着ていますが、そんな子はめったにいなかったそうです。
ほとんどの子どもはネルの布をかぶって寒さをしのいでいたそうです。
足元は下駄にタビ。このタビは手縫いのもので、足首を紐でしばるものでした。
強く縛るとなかなか脱げず、弱く縛ると歩いているときにほどけてしまう厄介なものだったようです。

Though the child heading the procession is wearing a coat, such a child was reportedly very rare.
It is said that most children wore a piece of flannel cloth to keep themselves warm.
They wore a pair of Japanese socks and clogs. These socks were sewn by hand and had strings to tie ankles. 
The strings seem to have been annoying because they were difficult to loosen when tied tightly and easy to undo when tied a little bit loosely.
