傾斜の少ないヤマでも、はやく炭車を現場に到着させるために、坑口の傾斜を急にしていました。

そのため、炭車があがって来る時、坑口で急にスピードが落ちて停止してしまうこともありました。

これはボイラーに二号炭とよばれる質の悪い石炭を使っていたので、

動力の蒸気機関が十分な力を発揮できていなかったからです。

そんなときには、炭車の配送係が全員で、ロープを引っ張っていました。
