Miners were especially nervous of supports because they were very afraid of roof falls.
Supports without a wooden wedgewere disliked because they did not crack and give any warnings of roof falls when they received excessively great pressure from the roof on them.
Additionally, supports were normally stood on their smaller end and a one stood on its bigger end, which was called Tanukibashira, or raccoon dog pillar, were disliked very much.
The reason why it was called Tanukibashira is reportedly because when a raccoon dog took the shape of a pillar, the bottom of the pillar was thicker than the top of it.
