重圧で、坑内の天井が落ちてきている様子を描いた作品です。
前兆として柱の上部に挟んでいるクサビがパチパチと音を出し始め、

柱の節目などからもバリバリと折れる音がし始めます。

ヤマではこのような状態を荷が来たと言い、

地圧で天井が崩落して危険なので、すぐに避難しなければなりません。

しかし、この重圧で石炭層も崩れてきて、石炭を容易に採ることができるため、

危険を冒して、採掘する人もいました。

 

In this painting the drive ceiling is depicted as gradually lowering from the earth's pressure.
When this occurred, the wedges that are stuck between the top of the pillar and the ceiling started to make a snapping sound. 
The joints of the pillars also started to make breaking sounds.
All miners took this as a sign of oncoming danger of a roof fall, requiring immediate evacuation.
However, with such a roof fall, the coal seam above also would fall, making it very easy to dig for coal.
Weighing the benefits of surviving a roof fall or easily mining coal, some miners took the risk of staying in the pit rather than evacuating.
