In 1918, Komesodo, a rice riot, broke out and spread nationwide because of the sudden rise in rice prices.
In the Chikuho region, the first Komesodo took place in the MinejiPit in 1918
because there was no pay raise in the miners’wages in spite of rice prices rising to 4 times higher than the previous two years.
In this painting, Sakubei is describing humorously how miners could not afford to buy rice so the rice cooking pan took a nap,
the rice bins stayed empty, and all could not be used.
