そこで先山たちは、毎回5、6本かついで坑内に入ります。
作業を終えると毎日鍛冶屋に立ちより修理を依頼します。
大正の中ごろ、ツルハシの先だけを交換できる改良ツルハシが登場しました。
これだと、替え刃を持っていけば、一本担いでいくだけで入坑でき、大変便利になりました。
鍛冶屋の修理代は、ハガネ付けの場合は2銭5厘。
焼きを入れてたたき直すだけの場合は5厘だったと作兵衛翁は記しています。

This is because the tip of the axe would bend while digging.
At the end of every working day, the Sakiyama would drop by the blacksmiths to have his pickaxes repaired.
Around 1930, a new type of pickaxe with a replaceable tip was invented.
This made it incredibly convenient for the Sakiyama as he no longer needed to bring in many heavy axes
but only one pickaxe and some replaceable tips.
According to Sakubei’s text, repair expense at the blacksmith cost 0.025yen for attaching a steel tip,
and 0.005yen for general repairing.
