採掘した石炭は、炭函が降りてくるまで一旦空き地に溜めておきます。これを「カブダシ」といいます。
通常は一箱分石炭が溜まると炭函を入れて石炭を積みこみますが、
箱の到着が遅れると石炭が何箱分も溜まります。
到着した炭函に早く積み込んだ者から次を確保できるので、ここは一秒を争う後山たちの競争の場。
ザルに「ガンヅメ」でかきこみ炭函へ。
ひとかきでザルをいっぱいにできない後山は下手とされていました。
While hewers dug for coal, carriers called Atoyama hauled and loaded it on to the coal skips.
However, when all skips were being used and none were available, they stored the coal in open spaces.
This stocking of coal at an open space was called Kabudashi.
Usually when carriers stored enough coal for one coal skip, they loaded it into the car.
But when there were no skips available, they would leave an approximate amount to fill a number of skips in that area.
There was always great competition to try and load one skip quickly in order to get the next available skip.
Atoyama used a rake called Ganzume to fill their basket with coal.
If Atoyama could not rake in one basketful at a time, they were considered unskillful.
