This is a picture of a scene in which the carrier of the coal, Atoyama, is pulling out coal from the coal face.
The basket filled with coal, seen at the bottom left hand corner of the picture, is called Sura.
It is a bamboo basket with a pair of runners attached to its bottom.
The Atoyama carried up coal using this Sura when the slope was relatively mild.
The ladder like track called Koro, doubled as secure toeholds and as a smooth track for the Sura.
Miners also dug small holes in the ground for toeholds instead of Koro when the ground was solid enough to sustain the weight.
The straps being used to pull the Sura are made of hemp and called Karui.
