This is a painting illustrating girls playing a game around 1900.
Children hold hands and circle around the person who is ‘it’ in the middle of the circle, singing a nursery rhyme.
When the song comes to an end, the children stop, and the person in the middle has to guess who is standing directly behind her.
If she guesses correctly, she can return to the circle, while the girl who she guessed was standing directly behind her has to sit down in the center of the circle and become the next one to guess.
