曲片(かねかた)とは石炭を運搬する主要坑道のこと。
徐々に機械化が進んだ大正・昭和期の中規模以上の炭坑では、

切羽から曲片への石炭の運び出しにも機械が利用され始めます。
この作品には5つの切羽運搬機が描かれています。

どれも、後山（あとやま）の仕事が機械化されたものです。

 

 

Kiriha is a term meaning ‘a coal face’, and Kanekata means ‘a main drive” to transport coal.
Around 1910, the development of machinery to haul coal from the coal face to the main drive slowly phased out the work of the Atoyama, who was responsible for carrying the coal out of the mines.
Five of these types of machinery are illustrated in this painting.
