Around 1900, coal miners were also known by the name Ishiyamato.
These four illustrations depict the variety of works Ishiyamato performed in coal mines.
Picture No.1: This hewer is attaching a pick head to a handle.
Hewers were recognized as professionals if they could do this job quickly and skillfully.
The two dotted lines scaled from the end of the handle to the pick head had to be the same length.
Picture No. 2: Atoyama, the carrier is raking coal into a bamboo winnow called Ebi-jouke.
If the Atoyama wasn’t able to rake in one basketful at a time they were considered unskillful.
Picture No. 3: This is an illustration of a Sakiyama and Atoyama installing the main frame of a coal shaft.
Picture No.4: This type of frame was called Ninawasewaku, which was used mainly at coal faces. Skilled repairmen did not use wedges.
