The Komesodo which broke out in Mineji Pit, Tagawa County, was held down by the military on August 18th in 1918,
but its movement spread to other coal mines in the vicinity.
On August 27th, miners of Yahata Ironworks Futase Branch Center Coal Pit gathered at Kifune Shrine during their working hour, demanding a 30 % wage increase and reduction in the price of rice.
However, the company refused to answer or address the issues.
The gathering turned into a riot that night.
