Coal excavated from the mine is loaded onto cars and winched up a steep slope. 
After switching rails, it is then lowered to flat ground outside of the pit to be unloaded. 
The full loaded car is disconnected and replaced by a new set of empty cars to be pulled back up the slope and lowered back into the pit again.
This system proved efficient as it prevented reckless car accidents because they did not have to change cars while on the slope.
