この作品に描かれているのは、炭車や人車を引っ張りあげるための巻揚機です。

右側が蒸気捲揚機で左側が電気捲揚機です。
明治の末期から昭和の初期にかけて、

捲揚機は蒸気を動力としたものから電気を動力にしたものへと移り変わっていきました。

炭坑のシンボルだった蒸気機関の煙突は次々に姿を消していきます。

しかし、大手の炭坑では、火力発電のための煙突がそびえたっていました。

On the right half of the picture is a steam winch, and on the left half is an electric winch.
From 1900 to 1940, the power source of the winch used in mines gradually changed from the steam engine to electricity.
During this time, chimneys of the steam engine, symbols of coal mines, slowly started to disappear one after another.
However, there were huge chimneys installed in major coal mines which had their own thermal power generating system.
