坑外から直通する傾斜した主要運搬坑道は、それぞれの採炭現場へと分かれていきます。

その枝分かれした場所に空の炭車が坑外から入ってくると、ロープを外します。

空の炭車はロープを外せば、傾斜で自走していきます。
逆に、石炭を積んだ炭車は、ロープをつなぎ坑外へと捲揚げるのです。
中規模以上のヤマでは炭車の振り分けを行う、坑内棹取と呼ばれる労働者がいました。

At each diverging point, full coal cars were connected to a winch and pulled out and upward toward the outside. 

At the same time, empty coal cars connected to this pulley system descended down to be loaded.
