石炭を積むための空の函つまり空の炭車が回されて来ない時は、石炭を運搬する作業ができませんでした。

このことをハコナグレといいます。
ハコナグレしないヤマは珍しく、空の炭車が何時間も来ず、坑内で16時間以上待つこともあったようです。
採炭現場で働けば汗がでますが、炭車を待っている時間が長いと寒くなります。
初めのうちは雑談で盛り上がりますが、待ち時間が長くなると皆退屈していました。

Known as Hakonagure, miners endured waits of up to 16 hours or more. 
Working in the coal mine was typically hot and sweaty, but during these Hakonagure times the workers got very cold. 
Workers enjoyed small talk, but as the long wait went by, boredom ensued.
